# Allergen

## Definition

An allergen is any substance that triggers an abnormal [immune response](/glossary/immune-response) in a person who is sensitized to it, even though the substance itself is typically harmless to most people. Common allergens include pollen, dust mites, pet dander, certain foods (such as peanuts, shellfish, and eggs), insect stings, mold spores, and medications like penicillin.

When someone with allergies encounters an allergen, their immune system mistakenly identifies it as a threat. The body produces [immunoglobulin](/glossary/antibody) E (IgE) antibodies specific to that allergen, which attach to mast cells in tissues throughout the body. On subsequent exposures, the allergen binds to these IgE antibodies, causing the mast cells to release [histamine](/glossary/histamine) and other inflammatory chemicals - producing the familiar symptoms of an allergic reaction such as sneezing, itching, swelling, or in severe cases, anaphylaxis.

Allergies affect an estimated 50 million Americans each year and are the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the United States. Understanding which allergens trigger your symptoms is the first step toward effective management, whether through avoidance strategies, medications, or allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots).
