# Mitochondria

## Definition

Mitochondria are specialized organelles found in nearly every cell of the human body that generate the majority of the cell's energy supply in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Often called the 'powerhouse of the cell,' mitochondria do far more than produce energy - they regulate cellular metabolism, calcium signaling, heat production, programmed cell death (apoptosis), and the generation and management of reactive oxygen species ([free radicals](/glossary/free-radicals)).

Each cell contains hundreds to thousands of mitochondria, depending on its energy demands. Heart muscle cells, brain neurons, and liver cells - which have the highest energy requirements - contain the most mitochondria, sometimes numbering 5,000+ per cell. Mitochondria have their own DNA (mtDNA), inherited exclusively from the mother, which encodes essential components of the energy production machinery. This maternal inheritance pattern makes mitochondrial DNA useful for tracing maternal lineage in genetics and anthropology.

Mitochondrial health [has](/glossary/hyaluronic-acid) emerged as a major focus in aging research and medicine. As we age, mitochondria accumulate damage, become less efficient at producing ATP, and generate more harmful free radicals - creating a vicious cycle of [oxidative stress](/glossary/oxidative-stress) and energy decline. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in virtually every age-related disease, including heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's), diabetes, cancer, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Emerging research on mitochondrial-targeted therapies, including CoQ10, NAD+ precursors, and mitochondrial biogenesis stimulators like exercise, represents one of the most promising frontiers in longevity science.
