Endorphins are a group of neurotransmitters produced naturally by the central nervous system and pituitary gland that act as the body's built-in painkillers and mood elevators. The name 'endorphin' is a contraction of 'endogenous morphine' — reflecting the fact that these chemicals bind to the same receptors in the brain as opioid drugs, producing similar (though much milder) effects of pain relief and euphoria without the risks of addiction and overdose.
