    Definition

    Homeostasis is the body's ability to maintain stable internal conditions despite constant changes in the external environment. It is the fundamental principle underlying virtually all physiological processes — from regulating body temperature at 98.6°F to keeping blood pH within a narrow range of 7.35-7.45, to maintaining blood glucose, electrolyte concentrations, blood pressure, and hydration within optimal limits.

    Homeostatic regulation works through feedback loops — primarily negative feedback loops that detect deviations from a set point and activate corrective mechanisms. When your body temperature rises above normal, for example, the hypothalamus triggers sweating and blood vessel dilation to cool you down. When blood glucose rises after a meal, the pancreas releases insulin to bring it back to normal. When blood pressure drops, baroreceptors trigger increased heart rate and vasoconstriction to restore it.

    When homeostatic mechanisms fail or are overwhelmed, disease results. Diabetes is a failure of glucose homeostasis. Hypertension represents disrupted blood pressure homeostasis. Autoimmune diseases reflect a breakdown in immune homeostasis. Understanding homeostasis helps explain why the body responds to disruptions the way it does, and why maintaining the conditions that support homeostatic balance — proper nutrition, adequate sleep, regular exercise, stress management — is the foundation of good health.
