    Definition

    REM (rapid eye movement) sleep is one of the five stages of sleep, characterized by rapid movements of the eyes behind closed lids, temporary muscle paralysis (atonia), increased brain activity comparable to wakefulness, vivid dreaming, and irregular heart rate and breathing. REM sleep accounts for approximately 20-25% of total sleep time in healthy adults, occurring in cycles roughly every 90 minutes throughout the night, with REM periods becoming longer toward morning.

    During REM sleep, the brain is extraordinarily active — processing emotions, consolidating memories, and performing neural maintenance. Studies show that REM sleep is particularly important for emotional memory processing, creative problem-solving, and procedural learning (how-to skills). The temporary muscle paralysis during REM prevents you from physically acting out your dreams, though dysfunction of this mechanism results in REM sleep behavior disorder.

    Inadequate REM sleep has been linked to impaired emotional regulation, difficulty with complex learning tasks, increased sensitivity to pain, and mental health disturbances.
